A woman who has been denied medicinal cannabis on the NHS says she will risk prison by growing the drug herself.

Carly Barton, from Brighton, has the neurological condition fibromyalgia and said cannabis was the only treatment that helped relieve her symptoms.

Her cannabis prescription was blocked because doctors said there was not enough evidence to support its medical use.

Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg says they do not pursue people for using the drug for medicinal purposes.

The relocation will bring crews, fundraising and admin staff together at a centre at Urlay Nook, Eaglescliffe.

The fundraising team from Newton Aycliffe and Darlington's head office staff will also work from the site.

The move will save about £120,000 a year on the three existing locations which can be "better spent on frontline care and improving our service", a spokesman for the charity said.

  12. Church repairs 'may prove too costly'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 29 April 2019

    BBC Tees

It's feared the cost of repairing a 1960s-built church in Middlesbrough could be too high.

Yesterday saw the final Sunday service at St Agnes in Easterside before they move a community hub.

Only smaller weekday services will be held at the church while consultations are held over its future.

Reverend Andy Grant said: "It's a unique building and a fantastic space inside, but over time it's become clear the materials used for the major part of the construction have deteriorated beyond repair."

  14. Tyne and Wear Metro disruption today and tomorrowpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 29 April 2019

Services on the Tyne and Wear Metro between Benton and St James are to remain suspended for the rest of today and into tomorrow.

The problem arose after two sections of overhead line came down.

A total of 600m (2,000ft) of line has come down between Palmersville and West Monkseaton, causing damage to masts in the area. A 500m (1,600ft) section is also down at Chillingham Road.

Nexus, which owns and manages the Metro, says the extent of the damage is significant. A frequent replacement bus service and ticket acceptance on local bus services is in place.

Replacement buses are running between Four lane Ends and North Shields.

    BBC Look North

Now, they were trying to set the world record for the fastest females to run the London Marathon dressed as toiletery items.

And we're told that Katie Simpson and Fiona Henderson, from Eaglescliffe, completed yesterday's event in about three hours, 51 minutes. The pair are now waiting for their attempts to be ratified.

Hopefully they'll have less trouble than the runner dressed as Big Ben who got stuck at the finish line.

Lukas Bates, from Maidstone, Kent, tried to get into the Guinness World Records Book for fastest marathon time dressed as a landmark.

The 30-year-old needed help from a race volunteer to complete the marathon after the top of his Big Ben costume clipped the top of the finish line arch.

  18. Police warn online shoppers about 'naive' illegal purchasespublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 29 April 2019

Shoppers are being warned they could face jail over "naïve" purchases of stun guns, imitation firearms and offensive weapons.

Northumbria Police say they had seen an increase in the number of overseas parcels containing offensive weapons being delivered to the North East.

In the past year, a total of 219 parcels have been seized by UK Border force staff. Most came from outside the UK.

Of those 21 packages contained Tasers, which are banned in this country. Possession of a Taser carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.

Police officers have been working alongside border force officials to trace people buying the items and have made a number of arrests. Police Cautions have been issued and some cases have been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for progression through the courts.
