1. Restaurant meal 'put nut allergy woman at risk'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

A Newcastle restaurant which served a meal containing nuts to a woman with a severe allergy has been fined.

The woman had informed staff at Dobson and Parnell of her allergy on two occasions, but despite this her pan-fried black cod dish contained nuts, causing her to have a serious anaphylactic shock.

Newcastle Magistrates Court was told the incident was due to a breakdown of communication between the customer and kitchen; a lack of memory function on the premises’ tills to store allergy information; no mention of nuts on the menu listing for the selected dish; and the pressure faced by staff during the busy Restaurant Week, last August.

The restaurant pleaded guilty at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court to selling unsafe food and was fined £4,000, ordered to pay £3,000 compensation to the victim and legal costs amounting to a total of £10,097.50.

Since then, the company has reviewed its practices, training and management of allergens and has been included on the Lifelabs’ list of Newcastle’s allergy and intolerance friendly restaurants.

  2. Steve Bruce: 'The most important thing is how you respond'published at 13:59 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    BBC Sport

Manchester United are Sunday's visitors at St James' Park following Newcastle's 5-o defeat by Leicester last weekend.

Speaking at his press conference this morning, manager Steve Bruce said facing them was always "a special occasion".

He said: "When you get beaten as badly as we did, you know what’s coming. The one thing you have to do is respond and look forward to the next game to erase it.

"When you get beaten in a certain manner, you have a good right to be angry. The most important thing is how you react to it and how you respond to it."

  3. Police seize weapons bought onlinepublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

Officers have seized a total of 30 prohibited weapons destined for addresses across the North East as part of an ongoing operation with the UK Border Force Agency.

Last month, officers from the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) were notified of 30 weapons intercepted at ports by UK Border Force staff.

These included a South Shields man who was visited by police after ordering a flick knife online.

Officers found gas-powered pellet pistols, a gas-powered pellet rifle, a large hunting knife and nunchucks.

All of these were surrendered to police.

A representative from NERSOU’s disruption team said: “We know that some knives and weapons are legal to own and we are not forcing people to surrender these.

“The purpose of these visits is simply to seize dangerous weapons which have been brought into the country illegally and to offer advice on what the law states with regards to buying items from overseas and make sure we prevent any unnecessary harm being caused.”

  5. Mum relives struggle over daughter's illness diagnosispublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    BBC Tees

A Stockton mum says she was left "questioning her own sanity" as she fought to get her daughter diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Four doctors failed to diagnose Teissy Williams' daughter, Khiannah Williams, with Leigh syndrome - a neurological disorder that leads to death through respiratory failure.

Khiannah is three and the life expectancy for a child with the condition is, sadly, only four.

Teissy said: "From one we noticed she was sick quite a lot. Doctors just put it down to bugs. At that point she was doing everything a normal one-year-old would - sitting up and crawling.

"From one to two, she started to get fatigued and sluggish. From there she went from being able to walk to not walking. Now she probably says 'yes' and 'no' and that's it."

Today Claire Pugh, from Billingham, is putting herself through an intense fitness challenge to raise money for a special party on Sunday for Khiannah.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy says it's "very worrying news" for those staff but adds is hasn't been approached by the company for any financial help.

Ineos has blamed years of under-investment and the fact it'll cost almost £200m to make the site comply with environmental regulations.

Bosses are meeting with the Environment Agency today to start discussions on how to make the plant compliant with forthcoming emissions regulations.
