  1. BBC Look North's Paul Hudson pays tribute to weatherman McCaskillpublished at 10:29 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    BBC Look North's Paul Hudson has paid tribute to former TV weather forecaster Ian McCaskill, who's died aged 78.

    Mr McCaskill, who had been living with dementia for the past five years, lived in a care home in South Milford near Selby.

    Paul Hudson, BBC Look North's weather presenter, who co-wrote the book Frozen In Time with Mr McCaskill, said he was "really sorry" to hear of his death.

    "We had great fun writing our book Frozen In Time. A warm, funny, generous and kind man," he added.

  2. Landslip-hit section of Settle-Carlisle line set for March reopeningpublished at 10:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    Part of the Settle-Carlisle rail line damaged by a 500,000-tonne landslip is scheduled to reopen on 31 March, it has been announced.

    The stretch at Eden Brows, between Carlisle and Armathwaite, closed in February following heavy rain and Network Rail launched a £23m scheme to underpin the line.

    Hundreds of concrete-filled steel piles are being driven into the bedrock.

    Rail replacement buses are currently running between Carlisle and Appleby.

    steel, tunnel-like structure will sit beneath the railway, 230ft (70m) above the nearby River Eden, to provide a stable base across the damaged ground.

  3. Police widen search for missing teenagerpublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    North Yorkshire Police say they are now working with Avon and Somerset Police in their search for a teenager who's been missing for nearly two days, external.

    Lilibeth Ambler-Lomax, 13, from Tadcaster, is believed to have travelled to the Bristol area.

    She was last seen by her father at Huddersfield Railway Station on Sunday afternoon where she was due to get a train to York. 

    However, she failed to return home at the expected time and was reported missing at 19:30 on Sunday.  

    Police are appealing to anyone who has seen her, had contact with her, or knows where she is now, to contact them.    

  4. Watch: Christmas lights as far as the eye can see in Sessaypublished at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    This morning I've been to see more Christmas lights than I've ever seen in one place before - in Sessay near Thirsk.

    The lights at Moorgate Plantation are seen by thousands of people a day as they whizz past on trains heading to Scotland or London on the East Coast Main Line.

    The display is the pride and joy of Trevor Imeson.

    He's had his work cut out this year, though, because of damage cause by the flooding last Christmas.

    Take a look at this great display and keep your eyes peeled for some real live animals, a stable and some straw - very festive!:

  5. Last day of North Yorkshire firefighters' industrial action ballotpublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    A ballot over possible industrial action by North Yorkshire's firefighters is due to close later today.

    The vote's over plans to replace six fire engines with smaller Tactical Response Vehicles.

    Their introduction in Harrogate, Malton, Northallerton, Ripon, Tadcaster and Scarborough has been approved by the Fire Authority. 

    But the Fire Brigades Union says the vehicles could put firefighters and the public "at risk".

    We should know the outcome of the ballot on Wednesday.

    Yorkshire's community spirit is being praised by a government minister, as Pateley Bridge celebrates winning the Best Village Category at the Great British high Street Awards.

    It also won Bronze for it's Twitter content during the competition. 

    The win comes after Bishopthorpe Road in York took the overall prize last year and Helmsley also won Best Market Town. 

    In fact, North Yorkshire is the only county in the country to win three awards across the two years.

    Disruption's continuing on the A19 where one lane's closed at Mount Bank southbound between the A684 junction in Ellerbeck and the A61 junction in South Kilvington.

    It's due to an earlier vehicle fire, recovery work and debris on the road.  

  10. Weatherman Ian McCaskill dies, aged 78published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    Some sad news this morning. 

    Former BBC weather presenter, Ian McCaskill, has died at the age of 78.

    Ian, who had dementia, lived in a care home in South Milford, near Selby.

    His daughter Kirsty says he was "a truly lovely man and brought lots of sunshine to people's lives".

    Police are appealing for help in finding a North Yorkshire teenager who's been missing for nearly two days, external and is now believed to have travelled to the Bristol area.

    Lilibeth Ambler-Lomax, 13, from Tadcaster, was last seen by her father at Huddersfield Railway Station on Sunday afternoon and she was due to get a train to York. However, she failed to return home at the expected time and was reported missing at 19:30 on Sunday.

    Police now believe Lilibeth has travelled to Bristol and are appealing to anyone who has seen her, had contact with her, or knows where she is now, to contact them.

    She's described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, with shoulder length, brown and auburn wavy hair. 

    When she was last seen, she was wearing a grey sweatshirt, black bomber jacket, blue jeans and was carrying a tan-coloured hand bag and a black cabin bag on wheels.

    The roads are off to a good start today in most parts of north Yorkshire, but there's one lane closed on the A19 north of Northallerton.

    The road's closed soutbound between the A684 junction in Ellerbeck and the A61 junction in South Kilvington because of an earlier vehicle fire and debris on the road.

  19. Ripon sinkhole: Residents home for Christmas after temporary repairpublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Residents of six homes in Ripon which had to be evacuated following the appearance of a sinkhole on Magdalen's Road last month should be able to move in before Christmas. 

    They had to leave when a major sewer collapsed, leading to the appearance of the 20m by 10m hole which was about 9m deep.

    Yorkshire Water says it's put a temporary repair in place which means they can move back in if they want to.

    Engineers are expected to begin working on the project again in the New Year.

    York has played host to what has been described as a unique social experiment and which will be broadcast on BBC2 tonight and tomorrow.

    The programme is called Muslims Like Us and sees 10 British Muslims with contrasting world views move into a house together in the city. 

    The programme's makers say they hope their debates, humour and insights reveal what it's like to be a British Muslim today.
