  19. Carol service remembers Tadcaster floodspublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

A special carol service was held in Tadcaster on Sunday to give thanks to all those who rallied round to help victims and provide shelter when the town was hit by the Boxing Day floods.

    Carol service

Scores of homes and businesses in the town were damaged by flooding at Christmas, while the bridge across the River Wharfe collapsed on 29 December.

The Reverend Sue Sheriff, from St Mary's Church in Tadcaster, said yesterday's service recognised parallels between the Christmas story and events last year:

"One of the flooded families was expecting a baby anytime and they needed somewhere to stay. We had the firefighters on call overnight - they were some of the first on the scene.

"Then we had help from the east - not just the east of Tadcaster but also from the mosques over in Leeds."

You can hear the carol service, including a Yorkshire dialect version of the shepherd’s story, on Christmas Eve at 14:00 and Christmas Day at 10:00 on BBC Radio York.
