    Rail services are running to time out of York station according to their departures board., external A reminder that if you are travelling further afield there's more industrial action on Southern Rail.

    On the roads, it's busy heading up the A658 at Pool Bank and quite a bit of traffic on the A59 heading towards Knaresborough and the A1.  

    It is very icy this morning so watch out for untreated roads and cycle paths.

    It is another frosty start. A cold, crisp, sunny morning for many, although it could be a little cloudier along the coast where an isolated shower is possible. These will disappear leaving a dry and sunny day across the county, but it will stay cold.

    That's all from me today but there'll be more stories from the team throughout the afternoon. I'll be back from 07:00 tomorrow.  A reminder that there's a yellow warning of ice for North Yorkshire overnight so take care on untreated surfaces. Here are five things we've learn't today in North Yorkshire:

    1. Imagine the police's surprise when they pulled over a Mercedes in York last night to find a 13-year-old boy driving it. It was his parent's car.
    2. Ripon diver Jack Laugher is angry that his diving coach has quit.
    3. York's Castle Museum is putting on an exhibition about iconic sweets and chocolate bars.
    4. The public's being urged to have their say on Knaresborough's most polluted junction. The air needs to be cleaned up at Bond End.
    5. TV's Big Allotment Challenge star, Michael Moseley, is to be the new President of the North of England Horticultural Society.

    Preparations for this year's Tour de Yorkshire are well underway. Have you chosen your spot yet?

    In the run-up to the event, Welcome to Yorkshire, has organised a series of roadshows.This gives residents and businesses the opportunity to find out more and learn how to make the most of this year's cycle race.

  10. Reducing air pollution at one of Knaresborough's busiest junctionspublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Knaresborough's Bond End junction is one of the town's most congested. In 2013 it was declared an Air Quality Management Area. , externalThis means that air pollution is higher than the national objectives and an Action Plan has to be put in place to improve the air quality there.

    North Yorkshire County Council is working with Harrogate Borough Council to get the public's views on what might be done to deal with the problem.

    Ideas include improving traffic signals, improving cycle routes and reducing emissions from Harrogate Borough Council's fleet of vehicles.

  12. Police stop Mercedes - find driver is 13published at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    A 13-year-old boy has been stopped by police after going for a drive in his parents' car in North Yorkshire.

    The black Mercedes was pulled over on St Oswald's Road in the Fulford area of York just after 11pm last night. The boy was found at the wheel.

    North Yorkshire Police said they had received a call earlier in the evening to report a car being driven by someone without a licence or insurance.

    A force spokesperson said no chase was required, with no-one injured.

    Leading floral designer Jonathan Moseley has been appointed President of the North of England Horticultural Society.  He takes over the role at this year's Harrogate Spring Flower Show.

    Jonathan was the floral expert on the BBC's Big Allotment Challenge.

    He succeeds Lucinda Compton, of Newby Hall, near Ripon, who has been President since 2013.

    Jonathan is based in Derbyshire and specialises in designing large scale floral installations, as well as running floral design and floristry workshops from his Flower School.  

    During 2017 he's going to lead a national campaign to promote commercial British flower growing. 

    The  North of England Horticultural Society, external is a gardening charity which organises Harrogate's Spring and Autumn Flower Shows.

  15. RMT to ballot Arriva Rail North workers on action over paypublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Workers at Arriva Rail North are to vote on strike action and action short of a strike, over what the RMT union describes as an unacceptable pay offer from the company.

    Arriva took over the franchise last year to operate rail services across the North. They'd previously been run by Northern Rail.

    The RMT says the dispute is over a pay offer that doesn't match benchmarks for pay deals that they've set elsewhere across the industry. 

    The union has accused Deutsche Bahn, which is the company's franchisee, of offering their members below the rate for pay deal for the job they do.

    The ballot will run from 10 January to 25 January.

  18. MP's warn that Brexit could harm farming, wildlife and our countrysidepublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    North Yorkshire farmer Richard Bramley has welcomed a report from MPs which warns that our countryside, farming and wildlife could be at risk under changes brought about by Brexit. 

    The Environmental Audit Committee says farmers face changes to trading agreements... and they could lose their subsidies.

    It also says protections for wildlife and habitats could be weaker. It's calling for the government to draw up new laws to protect the countryside and farmers.

    A 3.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of North Yorkshire.

    The tremor was detected about 100 miles (150km) east of Scarborough in the North Sea at 18:52 GMT on Tuesday.

    A British Geological Survey (BGS) spokesman said people may have experienced a "minor tremor", but the quake would not have caused any structural damage.
