    A York-based writer has just published a series of short stories which are being likened to the work of world-renowned horror writer Stephen King.

    Alex Willmott's three stories called Boxman are being praised by critics.

    He has another series coming out in a few months. He's been speaking to me about his books.

  3. Olympic diving champion furious after diving coach quits GB rolepublished at 08:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    North Yorkshire's Olympic champion Jack Laugher has blamed British Diving after his coach quit his role to join Australia's team.

    Adrian Hinchliffe guided Laugher and Chris Mears to Team GB's first ever Olympic diving gold in Rio.

    He is employed by Leeds City Council and worked for British Diving as a consultant but wanted to make a full-time switch to prepare for Tokyo 2020.

    However, British Diving failed to make an offer and Hinchliffe has joined Australia Diving as head coach.

  6. Earthquake of 3.8 magnitude strikes off Scarborough coastpublished at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    An earthquake has struck off the Yorkshire coastline. The British Geological Survey , externalsays it had a magnitude of 3.8 and was approximately 100 miles from Scarborough. 

    According to the British Geological Survey up to 30 earthquakes are felt by people in the UK each year, and a few hundred smaller ones are recorded by sensitive instruments.

    The largest known British earthquake occurred 60 miles offshore near the Dogger Bank in 1931, with a magnitude of 6.1, causing minor damage to buildings on the east coast of England.

    The most damaging UK earthquake was in the Colchester area in 1884 when about 1,200 buildings needed repairs after chimneys collapsed and walls were cracked.

    It may seem mild at the moment but it will be a cold day with often sunny skies. Most places remaining dry but there could be a few isolated showers. The brisk winds will ease and temperatures will fall quickly tonight, allowing frost to form.

    Hello, it feels quite mild this morning with no frost around. I'll be with you until 14:30 with the latest news, sport, travel and weather from around North Yorkshire.

    Stories making headlines this morning: an earthquake about 100 miles off the coast of Scarborough and an MP's report says changes from Brexit could put our countryside, farming and wildlife at significant risk.

    That's it from me today. Our local live service continues throughout the afternoon. I'll be back tomorrow morning from 07:00.

    So what did we learn today:

    1. North Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses after the discovery of 42-year-old Craig Darren Batters' body in the River Ouse on New Year's Day
    2. Harrogate hospital is so busy they've asked people to only visit A&E in a real emergency
    3. Protests against rail fare increases have taken place at York and Scarborough stations
    4. Figures from Make it York show that visitors are returning to the city following the Christmas 2015 floods
    5. Customers from an independent tapas restaurant chain based in York have helped to raise £45,000 for local charities

    Tributes have been paid to a former chairman of North Yorkshire County Council, who's died, after nearly 40 years of service. 

    Michael Heseltine,who was 78, was first elected to the council in 1977. 

     He represented Richmondshire North Division, and was due to step down in May.

    He died last Friday, after a short illness.  Council leader Carl Les says the former teacher was "hugely respected".

    After this morning's icy start, most places will remain dry today with broken cloud. Some sunny intervals are likely. The western hills might have some drizzle. 

    Tonight could will thicken with occasional light rain. It will become clearer and chillier later. Isolated showers are possible near the coast where winds will become occasionally stronger.

    Roads around the county were icy this morning. This driver was very lucky after their car overturned on the road between Burton Leonard and Copgrove.

    North Yorkshire Police say thankfully the motorist received only a minor injury. It could have been much worse.

  19. Police appeal for witnesses after five vehicle crash on A64published at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    North Yorkshire Police want to hear from anyone who saw what happened on the A64 at Claxton yesterday afternoon.

    They say all five vehicles involved in a crash , including a white Heavy Goods Vehicle, were heading to York when it happened.  They say they want to speak to anyone who saw the lorry as it travelled from Malton to York. There were no reported injuries.
