    Counting continues to elect 462 councillors to 11 councils across Northern Ireland.

    Councillors in Northern Ireland are elected using the single transferable vote (STV) system and results are expected to continue late on Friday and into Saturday.

    Anne McCloskey has made history as the first Aontú candidate to be elected.

    She said she joined the party for a number of reason.

    "I am a life long republican, I am of the left, I am a feminist, I am a doctor and I am pro-life," she said.

    "I really hope that today is the beginning of one of many electoral successes for Aontú."

    SDLP councillor Laura Devlin was back out canvassing within weeks of the birth of baby Polly in March.

    She said it had "all been worth it" following her re-election in the Mournes District Electoral Area of Newry City, Mourne and Down District Council.

    'It's busy, it's hectic but I have been very fortunate to have a great team around me.

    "Whenever she needed fed we stopped and fed her before going around the doors.

    "It was trying at times but it was really enjoyable believe it or not."

    Counting in electoral districts Ballyarnett and Derg is now complete for Derry and Strabane.

    The SDLP has six seats, Sinn Féin four, the UUP secured one seat, and the DUP won three.

    The council will have a wider variety of parties, with People Before Profit’s Shaun Harkin taking a seat and new party Aontú will be represented by Anne McCloskey.

    Just 11 of 41 councillors have been elected in Newry City, Mourne and Down Council.

    Jarlath Tinnelly (Independent) topped the poll at Crotlieve with 1412 votes.

    Gareth Sharvin (SDLP) topped the poll in Downpatrick with 1395 votes.

    Terry Harty (Sinn Féin) topped the poll in Slieve Gullion with 1,876 votes.

    DUP councillor Glynn Hanna topped the poll in the Mournes with 1944 votes.
