The count for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is over with turnout ranging from 43% to 50%.

The big story from the count centre was the election of Alison Bennington, the first-openly gay candidate to stand for the DUP, after six counts.

While there has been lots of reaction to her election, Ms Bennington kept a low profile and refused to speak to the media.

It's a mixed picture for unionism. For the Ulster Unionists, it's a very bad day in Belfast.

They lost their councillor Peter Johnston. The people with the long faces around here, are Ulster unionists.

Some Ulster Unionists are fearful for tomorrow.

The DUP have seen their vote go up a little bit, but they haven't made the gains they thought.

If you were a Sinn Féin strategist in Belfast tonight, you would be disappointed.

The party has lost two seats, in Colin and looks as if they've lost a seat in Titanic.

The party will be really disappointed with that, their vote has gone down, but tomorrow there are five more seats to be counted - they may gain tomorrow.

  20. 'Major change in DUP ethos and values'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Antrim and Newtonabbey Borough Council

DUP MLA Jim Wells says the election of Allison Bennington in Newtownabbey and Antrim Borough Council represents "a major change in ethos and values of the DUP".

Ms Bennington is the first openly-gay candidate to stand for the party.

Mr Wells said: "There are many longstanding, faithful, hardworking DUP members who are extremely upset by this decision."

    Jim Wells

"Many thousands of people in Northern Ireland are depending on the DUP to hold the line on these moral issues," Mr Wells added.

"They feel very let down and very concerned about what has happened."

DUP leader Arlene Foster said Ms Bennington's election did not mark a change in her party's stance on same sex marriage.
