The prize for the first councillor elected went to Mid Ulster, Sinn Féin's Darren Totten topped the poll in Magherafelt.
There was early success, too, for the Greens with Aine Grogan topping the poll in Botanic in Belfast.
Green Party leader Claire Bailey said it was beyond anything they had imagined.
But these are early days and PR elections can swing one way and then another with much depending on transfers.
Last time, the DUP emerged with most seats although Sinn Féin won slightly more votes.
There are 462 seats up for grabs across 11 councils. A total of 819 candidates stood for election.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council
The DUP’s first openly-gay candidate Alison Bennington has polled 856 first preference votes in her bid to become to join Antrim and Newtownabbey Council - the quota is 993.
Deemed elected in first stage is Julian McGrath from Alliance and the DUP's Phillip Brett, an adviser to the DUP’s deputy leader Nigel Dodds.

Others deemed elected include the DUP’s Thomas Hogg.
Former UUP MLA Adrian Cochrane Watson, who was standing as an independent, polled 359 first preference votes in the Antrim DEA.

Virginia McVea, Northern Ireland's chief electoral officer, has told the BBC's Talkback programme that in one month between 9 March and 12 April there were more than 50,000 applications to register to vote. She said this was an unprecedented level. Most of those applications were made online.
