    But it's bad news for UUP councillor Jim Rodgers, who would have previously topped the poll. Mr Rodgers' vote has come down and is not likely to bring his running mate, Peter Johnston, with him.

    Áine Groogan, who was elected for the Green Party in Botanic, Belfast, says that the feedback from people on the doorsteps is that people are taking environmental issues seriously.

    Leader of the Greens Clare Bailey says that the win is also a "non-sectarian vote".

    "People are sick of the tribal politics. People are trusting us to deliver on something else," she says.

    With two SDLP candidates as the first councillors to be elected in Derry City and Strabane, the SDLP vote will be seen as the party beginning to reverse its downward spiral.

    Derry is considered the party’s spiritual home but Sinn Féin overtook them and became the largest party in the 2014 council elections.
