  2. Watch: 'I was a hooker'published at 12:28

While praising Boris Johnson, who often reminisces about his own rugby days, David Cameron tells delegates about his position on the field: "I was a hooker."

He adds that this is a factual statement, and not a chapter of Lord Ashcroft's unauthorised biography of the prime minister.

  3. Cameron sets out steps to tackle extremismpublished at 12:27

David Cameron sets out the need to confront extremism. It makes him "sick to my stomach" when he reads what "some young people born and brought up in this country are doing".

The UK must "tear up the narrative that says Muslims are persecuted and the West deserves what it gets", take on violent and non-violent extremism "in all its forms", and tackle segregation, Mr Cameron adds.

    Quote Message

There are parts of Britain today where you can get by without ever speaking English or meeting anyone from another culture. Zoom in and you’ll see some institutions that actually help incubate these divisions."

  5. Cameron: Let's end discriminationpublished at 12:26

The Conservative leader says discrimination based on faith, gender, race, sexuality or disability is unacceptable, and adds "you can’t have true opportunity without real equality.":

    Quote Message

I want our party to get this right. Yes us, the party of the fair chance; the party of the equal shot; the party that doesn’t care where you come from, but only where you’re going. Us, the Conservatives, I want us to end discrimination and finish the fight for real equality in our country today."

  6. Cameron on opportunity and equalitypublished at 12:25

But education isn't the only barrier to social mobility, David Cameron continues. He says people with white-sounding names on their CVs "are nearly twice as likely to get call backs for jobs than people with ethnic-sounding names".

    Quote Message

We can talk all we want about opportunity, but it’s meaningless unless people are really judged equally."

  8. Cameron: We need to improve social mobilitypublished at 12:22

Britain has the lowest social mobility in the developed world, David Cameron tells the conference, with the salary people earn "more linked to what your father got paid than in any other major country".

"We cannot accept that," he tells the assembled crowd. He says education is the "springboard to opportunity" and praises the free schools and academies movement, and pledges:

    Quote Message

So my next ambition is this. 500 new Free Schools. Every school an academy, and yes – local authorities running schools a thing of the past."

  10. Cameron on prisons reformpublished at 12:20

David Cameron makes the case for prisons reform, saying the current system isn't working. He says crimes must be punished - with prison sentences for the most serious offences - but says nearly half of criminals re-offend and many go into prison, and leave, uneducated.

    Quote Message

We have got to get away from the sterile lock-em-up or let-em-out debate, and get smart about this. When prisoners are in jail, we have their full attention for months at a time – so let’s treat their problems, educate them, put them to work."

  11. 'This shames our country'published at 12:18

Children in care are almost guaranteed to live in poverty, says David Cameron. And he says care leavers are four times more likely to commit suicide than anyone else. He adds:

    Quote Message

These children are in our care; we, the state, are their parents – and what are we setting them up for? The dole, the streets, an early grave? I tell you: this shames our country and we will put it right."

  14. Cameron: We must tackle povertypublished at 12:16

David Cameron underlines the need to tackle the "root causes" of poverty in Britain. He says a teenager sitting their GCSEs is more likely to own a smartphone than have a Dad living with them, and says that three babies born in Britain every day are addicted to heroin.

"We will never deal with poverty unless we get to grips with these issues," he tells the halls.

Mr Cameron highlights the work of the Troubled Families' Programme, and says the best route out of poverty is work. But work has also got to pay, he adds - as he praises the new national living wage.
