  4. Yvette Cooper calls for Syria security briefingspublished at 16:06

    Yvette CooperImage source, Reuters

Former shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper is urging the prime minister to give her and other Privy Councillors direct security briefings ahead of a vote on military intervention in Syria.

Ms Cooper is one of the Labour MPs that could prove crucial to David Cameron's chances of winning Parliamentary backing for air strikes.

In a letter to the PM, she says more detail is needed on a number of key questions, including who will provide the ground troops to retake territory occupied by Islamist militants and what role Sunni Muslims will play in the peace process in Syria.

    Quote Message

I am concerned that very few MPs have been given detailed briefing by the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence (MoD) on this, and even fewer have had access to full security briefings. That makes it very difficult for MPs to contribute to the government's consideration of what form any motion should take, as well as to respond to the motion. Despite several inquiries I have been advised that the only briefing on offer is a general one from the MoD next Wednesday. I'm sure you would agree that this is insufficient - especially as there are suggestions the government is considering holding the vote on Wednesday."

  10. Labour MPs angry after Corbyn aide suspension liftedpublished at 15:11

    Ross Hawkins
    Political correspondent

Two Labour MPs say there appears to be one rule for members, and another for those who work for the party leader, after an aide to Jeremy Corbyn had his suspension lifted.

Andrew Fisher was suspended as a member of the party after tweeting support for another party's candidate.

In a joint statement Caroline Flint and Siobhain McDonagh write:

    Quote Message

"We are disappointed that the Labour Party has decided not to proceed with a full disciplinary inquiry by the NEC into Andrew Fisher, and instead issue a slap on the wrist. The Chair of this investigation has been subjected to huge pressure, and this has compromised the independence and integrity of Labour's disciplinary process.

    Quote Message

"It is unacceptable for members to support other parties, delight in Labour MPs losing their seats or to engage in cyber-bullying. Others have been excluded from our party for less than the activities of Mr Fisher. It would appear that there is one rule for members and one rule for those who work for the Party Leader."

  11. Fire Brigade Union rejoin Labour partypublished at 15:08

The Fire Brigade Union (FBU) - who left the Labour fold over the party's drift to the right under Tony Blair - has just re-affiliated to it.

The union said it felt "reinvigorated after the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader".

    Quote Message

We have a Labour Party leader and shadow chancellor who are vehemently opposed to austerity, who are ready to fight for a fair alternative that doesn’t attack the living standards, livelihoods and the hard won rights of working people."

  12. Jeremy Corbyn meeting South Africa's Julius Malemapublished at 15:05

    Esther Webber
    BBC News, London

As we reported earlier, the Labour leader cancelled a visit to Oldham West today, where he was due to campaign ahead of next week's by-election, in order to deal with the unfolding row over Syria.

But it seems he's found time for some other appointments, and is meeting Julius Malema this afternoon, as Africa Confidential reports:

Malema is the leader of South Africa's EFF party, a controversial figure and one of the most outspoken critics of President Jacob Zuma and the ANC.

Jeremy Corbyn famously campaigned in solidarity with the ANC against apartheid in the 1980s.

  13. Labour lifts Corbyn aide suspensionpublished at 15:00

Labour's National Executive Committee has lifted the suspension on Andrew Fisher, a key aide to Jeremy Corbyn, but warned him over his conduct after he backed another candidate at the general election.

Mr Fisher was suspended earlier this month after tweets encouraging voters to support another candidate, instead of Labour's, at the general election.
