  4. Watson: 'If it was a referendum on Corbyn, he won'published at 09:25

    Carole Walker
    Political correspondent

Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson says the party's win in the Oldham and Royton by-election was a "decisive victory" with the party increasing its share of the vote. He says "if it was a referendum on Jeremy Corbyn then he has won it".

Mr Watson tells Today that the complaints about the electoral process by UKIP leader Nigel Farage "seems like sour grapes to me". And says if he had evidence he should have raised concerns sooner.

Mr Watson says he hopes Labour MPs would look at the result and see what the party could achieve when it focused on issues which effect working people such as the cuts to tax credits. He says it was a good result for Jim McMahon but also a good result for Jeremy Corbyn and MPs should respect the decision of party members.

He says the majority of Labour MPs do respect Jeremy Corbyn and what he stands for, but he says "some have perhaps gone too far" with comments to the media which were "deeply unhelpful".

The UKIP leader Nigel Farage says his party will file a formal complaint about what he called "abuses" of the electoral process in the Oldham and Royton by-election.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he says he has seen "things which should not be happening in a modern democracy" with people turning up with "bundles of postal votes".

He says he was not saying any of this would have changed the result but that Labour would have had a "massively reduced" majority.

Mr Farage says "some of the things we've seen before in Birmingham and Tower Hamlets were happening in Oldham yesterday".

Mr Farage says some of the voters could not speak English and had never heard of UKIP or the Conservative Party.

He says that in modern Britain after mass immigration "it means that in some of these seats where people don't speak English but they are signed up for postal votes effectively the electoral process is now dead".

He says "we will file a formal complaint about the abuses that our people saw yesterday".  He says they had seen some boxes were 99 percent of the votes were for Labour and this "does not seem to be consistent with modern liberal democracy."
