Diane Abbott is pressed by David Dimbleby on whether she supports air strikes against so-called Islamic State in Iraq. This action was overwhelmingly backed by MPs last year after a request from the Iraqi government. But Ms Abbott voted against it.

"It's legal", Ms Abbott replies. "I think its legality is important."

If the action is part of a broader strategy, she says: "Of course it's right."

BBC chief political correspondent Vicki Young says the by-election is a test Jeremy Corbyn "should easily pass". The fear for Labour, she says, is that the party's divisions at Westminster could have a negative effect. And UKIP are "snapping at Labour's heels", she adds.

Labour is defending a 14,738 majority from May's general election.

But it faces a threat from UKIP in what is the first by-election of the current Parliament, with results expected early on Friday morning.
