Summary

Elections are held for 248 English councils, six mayors and all 11 councils in Northern Ireland
Conservatives and Labour both see vote shares fall compared with 2015
The Tories lose 44 councils and 1,334 seats
Theresa May says results message is: "Just get on and deliver Brexit."
Labour loses six councils and 82 seats
Lib Dems take control of 10 councils and won 703 seats
Greens and independents also make significant gains

Stuart Davies shouted to Theresa May: "We don't want you", and called on her to resign, before he was escorted away.

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, says the Conservatives suffered in the elections because they did not set a date for Theresa May standing down as leader.
He says the "absolutely dreadful" results showed that there should have been "some precise date put on when Theresa would be departing".
"Leaving it up in the air certainly played very badly on the doorsteps in the area that I represent," he says.
The backbench group the 1922 Committee should "deal with this matter immediately when Parliament returns on Tuesday".
"They must take action because we are haemorrhaging support," he says.

"Despite both their teams saying 'we get it, we know people want Brexit sorted', it seems to me both are paralysed by the divisions and splits in their own ranks from doing anything.
"For all the electorate shouting at the two main parties 'do something' both Mrs May and Mr Corbyn are like two startled bug-eyed rabbits stuck in the middle of the road with a great big TIR lorry, horn blaring, headlights on full beam, thundering towards them.
"And that TIR lorry is called the European elections, in a fortnight's time.
"Which, I suspect, are going to make last night's results look like a stroll in the park for the two main parties."

Labour would have fared better in the elections with a clearer message on Brexit, says MP Jess Phillips.
The Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley says "those who had a clear message last night... seemed to have prospered".
But, she says, that is not the case for her party.
"The reality is people don't know where the Labour Party stands with regard to Brexit - and to be honest I'm not sure.
"I don't now what's going to happen next week, I genuinely don't know what our position is going to be.
She adds: "People aren't always going to be utterly happy with what we have to say, but we should say something."
