Local elections: Reaction as counting continues after polls in England and NI

Summary

Elections are held for 248 English councils, six mayors and all 11 councils in Northern Ireland
Conservatives and Labour both see vote shares fall compared with 2015
The Tories lose 44 councils and 1,334 seats
Theresa May says results message is: "Just get on and deliver Brexit."
Labour loses six councils and 82 seats
Lib Dems take control of 10 councils and won 703 seats
Greens and independents also make significant gains
Anger over Brexit appears to be influencing voters, say experts

On the basis of the results in 650 wards in which the BBC has collected the detailed voting figures, we are projecting that the performances of the parties in these local elections would, if replicated across Britain as a whole, imply the following shares of the vote:
Our analysis indicates that both Conservative and Labour have lost ground heavily since last year's local elections when both were estimated to be on 35%.
This is only the second time that the projected national share has put Conservative and Labour below 30% - the last time we did so was in 2013 when UKIP secured a remarkable breakthrough in that year's local elections.
The Lib Dem performance represents a three-point increase on last year and is the party's highest projected share since the 2010 election, after which it entered the coalition with the Conservatives.
However, it is still below the performances that the party registered on a regular basis between 1993 and 2010, during which period the party's projected share never slipped below 24%.
Claims that this election represents the best Lib Dem performance ever thus needs treating with circumspection.

Brexiteer Tory MP Mark Francois has predicted the EU elections will be an "absolute tsunami" for the Conservative Party.
Reviewing the Tory performance in the local elections, the MP said: “This is just the beginning.”
He added: “In a tsunami the sea goes out, and comes crashing back in. This is the sea going out. The 23rd of May will be an absolute tsunami.”
“On the 23rd of May, people will get their own back on the establishment. They will take their revenge.”
The Conservative MP said the UK would never leave the EU while Theresa May was prime minister.
He said: “The only way we will leave is if my party elects a Brexiteer, someone who voted to leave, who’s got their heart in it."
