  1. Both major parties 'have failed' on Brexit - Huntpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

Jeremy Hunt in NairodiImage source, PA

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says both major parties have suffered losses in the local elections because "both have failed" to deliver Brexit, despite promises at the last election.

And he says now is not the time and place to be changing the Tory party leader.

Speaking to BBC's HARDtalk presenter, Stephen Sackur, in Nairobi, he says: "Both have failed and be it on our heads if we have another general election and we have not delivered the Brexit that we promised the British people we would."

Mr Hunt says the "real judgement" on Theresa May and the government will be if they "deliver the Brexit that the British people voted for" and to go on and "unite the country afterwards".

And speaking of the leadership, he says: "There will be a time and place for all those discussions but right now changing our leader would not help get this difficult issue of Brexit over the line in a hung parliament, and that's what all of us need to be focusing on."

  4. 'A good night for Lib Dems (without Change UK)'published at 14:40 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

Vicki Young summaries these local elections for the Lib Dems...

    Vicki Young
    Chief Political Correspondent

I think it's clear the Lib Dems are having a very good night. There are smiles on those activists faces, after - let's face it - some torrid years.

The coalition took its toll, they've been almost wiped out at the general election, their councillor-base has been decimated.

This looks like the sign of them starting to come back into it - trying to rebuild, trying to show they can run councils and really make in roads still in the areas.

It still where they've been strong, they're not necessarily branching into new areas as yet. But they will be absolutely thrilled.

It's important to remember though that they haven't got the Change UK up against them in these elections so they have had a bit more of a free run.

  8. UKIP 'on the up'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

UKIP’s Lawrence Webb says the party’s local election performance shows that the party’s fortunes are “on the up.”

Since the referendum, he says, UKIP’s fortunes took a bit of a downturn.

He pointed to “good and bad results across the board.”

“Yes we’ve lost some seats but also we’ve made gains.

“When you look at the results of areas like Sunderland, where we didn’t win, but got a lot of second places, there are good and bad results across the board.”

He says that UKIP’s main goal of getting the UK outside of the EU was “getting further and further away.”

  10. Abbott: 'Bring on general election'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 3 May 2019

    Dianne Abbott

Shadow Home Secretary Dianne Abbott says Labour would relish a general election, despite the party losing about 80 council seats.

Ms Abbott said the Lib Dems' success in the local elections may have shown the party has returned to its "traditional" position as a "protest vote".

She said: "We've seen these Lib Dem surges before and they don't translate into real gains at a general election.

"In relation to a general election, we say to the Tories: 'Bring it on'."
