    The former Conservative party chairman, and Welwyn Hatfield MP, Grant Shapps has said David Cameron made the right decision to resign.

    He said: "About 05:00 I texted him to say I hoped that he wouldn't resign immediately... the country needs stability.

    "I think he's probably met that half way by saying I'm not going now, I'm going to see us through this immediate turmoil but by October I think a new leader needs to be in place so I think he's judged that about right."

    The UKIP MEP for the East Midlands, Roger Helmer, has said the out result is "getting on for a lifetimes work".

    He's been a member of the European Parliament for 17 years and says he's "finally made it".

    On the workings of the Parliament he said "every time there's a European project we proudly say it doesn't effect us, we're going to get a veto.. but they find a way round".

    The Financial Times is reporting the vote to leave the EU damages the chances of Tata Steel, Britain’s biggest steel producer - which has a plant in Corby - maintaining its operations in the UK.

    A source close to the company said there will now be "recalibration" after the news the UK will leave the EU, external, a major market for Tata Steel UK.

    In Beds, Herts and Bucks, St Albans was one of the few areas voting to remain - with nearly 63% of the vote - and already there have been some (possibly lighthearted) calls for an independence vote for the city.

    Liam Bird, external and Cameron Ross , externalhave called for an independence campaign, while Alex @pintofsimilar said, external a few people wanted to "set up a city state similar to the Vatican".

    On a different note, Laura Keen has asked, external if anyone is up for a "Remain Rave".

    I've just been out on the streets in Stevenage to gauge opinion about the decision to leave. 

    Matthew Allen was in favour of Brexit and is feeling pretty happy today. 

    He told me migration was the issue that swung most peoples mind: "I don't agree with UKIP on a lot of things .. but if you can't get from A to B on a motorway without sitting in miles of traffic jams because there are so many people in the country now... then somethings got to give."

    Bob Kerr wanted us to remain in the EU, but he said the decision taken by David Cameron to stand down in autumn was the "responsible and reasonable thing to do: "We didn't want him to just drop out today because that would have caused more chaos than there already is going to be."

    Luton based travel company TUI Group, external has responded to the EU vote.

    CEO Fritz Jouseen said although he respects the decision, the "EU without the UK is barley conceivable".

    He said the company is well "prepared"  and "confident" it won't be "significantly affected by the decision."

    The MP for Northampton South, and remain campaigner, David Mackintosh has issued a statement on his website saying he is "very sad" David Cameron his resigned, but that "he can be proud of his legacy".

    General Motors - the parent company of Luton-based Vauxhall - has said it's important for its Vauxhall division that Britain remains part of the European Economic Area after its exit from the EU.

    Philip Hollobone, the MP for Kettering, has said chancellor George Osborne should also resign branding his campaigning over the EU Referendum "a disgrace".

    It follows the decision of Prime Minister David Cameron to resign after the country voted for a Brexit.

    He also indicated his Conservative colleague, Wellingborough MP, and prominent Leave campaigner Peter Bone should stand for the leadership - saying he would vote for him.

    Philip Hollobone, the Conservative MP for Kettering, says he is not sorry to see David Cameron resign saying the PM has been "trying to scare the British people" through the Remain campaign.

    He said although it is "right the Prime Minister has resigned" he has been a good leader of the Conservatives.

    Mr Hollobone said he did not know who might be the next leader of the party, but indicated Theresa May, tipped by many to run, "had been quiet" in the last days of campaigning despite supporting Remain.

    Luton-based Easyjet has said it is confident the vote will not have an impact on its strategy.

    The low-cost airline says it has been preparing for this eventuality and has been working on a number of options allowing it to continue flying in all of its markets.  

    Chief executive Carolyn McCall said the company has written to the UK Government and the European Commission "to ask them to prioritise the UK remaining part of the single EU aviation market, given its importance to trade and consumers".

    Conservative and Stevenage MP, Stephen McPartland - a Remain campaigner - has already spoken about the result this morning, saying he would "stand by" his constituents whichever way they voted.
