We have to accept that we live in a democracy and respect the rules of the game. I don't believe, however pro-European I may be, that could ever trump the decision of the people in an elected vote."

  12. The UK votes to leave the EUpublished at 06:05 British Summer Time 24 June 2016

    BBC Politics

It's official - the UK has voted to leave the European Union.

    BBC Live

London and Scotland voted strongly to stay in the EU but the remain vote has been undermined by poor results in the north of England.

Voters in Wales and the English shires have backed Brexit in large numbers.

The pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the results.

  13. EU referendum: Leave vote overwhelming in Eastpublished at 06:02 British Summer Time 24 June 2016

    Tom Barton
    BBC Look East political reporter

We have long known that the east of England is one of the most Euro-skeptic parts of Great Britain.

    Chelmsford count

In the past few hours, that fact has shown itself to be overwhelmingly true.

Across Essex and right up the east coast, people voted for Brexit. The same is also true further west in places like Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, with a few notable exceptions such Norwich and Cambridge.

As the sun rises over Lowestoft this region - just like the rest of Britain - is changed forever.
