Martin Tett, the Conservative leader of Buckinghamshire County Council, said: "People talk in Buckinghamshire about a north/south split and in fact it hasn't been that at all, you've got Aylesbury that's voted to leave and South Bucks, which is the other furthest extreme in the county, that's voted to leave and you've got Wycombe and Chiltern who voted to stay.

"If you look at the way the MPs lined up it's completely the reverse - David Lidington for stay, Dominic Grieve for stay and Cheryl Gillam for out and Steve Baker for out - so there's a real sort of irony in the way it's turned out."

The Conservative MP for Daventy Chris Heaton-Harris, who campaigned for a Leave vote, has said there's now plenty to do.

"We'll need a team of negotiators to go and talk to our European counterparts at a European Council next week where David Cameron will have to go himself to talk to other European leaders. There'll be consequences without a doubt for other European countries because we are by far and away not the most Eurosceptic country..."

There has been a dramatic fall in the value of sterling as traders react to the latest results from the EU Referendum.

At one stage it hit $1.34.77 - a low not seen since 1985.

But the MP for South Northamptonshire Andrea Leadsom - a leading campaigner for the Leave campaign - has said that's to be expected.

She said: "We've just had a period of extraordinary scaremongering and as we know the market will always position itself to try and take profit from something like this and so it's perfectly likely that there will be some volatility but our fundamentals in our economy remain very strong."

The Conservative MP for Wycombe Steve Baker said he believed David Cameron's was safe.

"I don't think there's any danger of colleagues combining against the prime minister, when you look at the number of colleagues who have been willing to sign that letter, as indeed I was, you can see that the movement in the party is to keep the prime minister in place and ensure he's able to go forward to stabilise the party and the country."
