    John Barrowman will carry the baton later in Newton Mearns.

    The actor and entertainer, who was born in Glasgow, is best known for playing Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood.

    He is also one of the star attractions during pantomime season in the city of his birth.

    Ian was nominated to carry the baton for his work with Down's Syndrome Scotland, external, where he serves as chair of the board. He is also involved with youth basketball in East Renfrewshire.

    Margaret Barr has been at the heart of the netball scene in East Renfrewshire for years. Through her work as a teacher, she promotes the sport in primary and secondary schools.

    Margaret was the first baton bearer in Barrhead.

    The first baton bearer today was Heather Anderson. Heather has lived 77 of her 83 years in the East Renfrewshire village of Uplawmoor.

    Heather has long been an active member of the community and has been involved with the local council, the church board and the church choir.

    She is also an accomplished golfer, and won the Scottish Ladies Championship in 1969.

    The community of Uplawmoor was up early to cheer on the first baton bearers of the day.

    The rain didn't put them off and 83-year-old Heather Anderson got today's relay under way.
