  17. Situation in Shetlandpublished at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

    John Johnston

Lightning and high winds did plunge part of the north and the west of the island into darkness for a few hours this morning. Supplies are still lost to about 2,500 customers on the islands of Yell and Unst, and Brae on the west side.

With no power this morning the Islands Council had no choice but to close eight schools. Around 270 customers are still without power this evening, but Scottish and Southern Energy tell us they hope to have them back on by around 18:00.

All internal ferries have been running but there has been a few delays down at the main airport. At the harbour, lots of oil and fishing boats are sheltering there, and looking out to sea there has been some spectacular views of the large waves pounding the jagged coastline.

  18. Latest from the Western Islespublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

    BBC reporter Roddy Munro

There are still 162 customers in Harris without power, and about 368 in Uist. SSE says they hope to have the majority of these people reconnected by 19:00.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar yesterday took the decision that all schools, sports centres and libraries in the Western Isles would be closed and it is hoped that as the weather abates throughout the night that it will be business as usual tomorrow.

There have been no ferry sailings for the last two days, and CalMac are running an amended timetable.

  20. Waves 'phenomenal' say coastguardspublished at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2014

Storms in December aren't unusual, but it's the waves that mark this one out as a bit different.

Stornoway coastguards have described the sea state as phenomenal - a term they keep for only the most extreme conditions.

Off the west coast, the waves have been averaging between 14 and 15 metres (around 45 or 50ft) although some have been considerably higher.
