    The National Trust, which cares for the archipelago of St Kilda, said a wind speed of 144mph was recorded on the group of islands earlier today.

    There is 'cautious optimism' that the worst of the weather is over, and that this so-called 'weather bomb' hasn't done quite the damage that it could have done.

    It was the overnight lightning that caused the most problems for many people.

    SSE said around 27,000 homes across the Western Isles and Skye were without power as well as pockets near Dingwall, Oban and Fort William, but the energy provider said most people have now been reconnected.

    A lorry driver has ignored warning signs on the Forth Road Bridge advising that it was closed to high-sided vehicles and is now stationery on the north bound carriageway of the bridge, causing delays.

    Traffic Scotland said the lorry is causing queues back to the M90 Spur and "is in a very dangerous position on the bridge".

    The Forth Road Bridge, external Twitter account added: "Delays n/bound after a lorry ignored warnings then stopped at south tower. FRB staff removed vehicle and are handing over driver to police."

    This evening the storm force winds will ease, however, it will remain windy with gale or severe gale force gusts across the country coming from a westerly direction.

    Showers will continue to be frequent with further significant accumulations of snow on high ground and wintry showers to low levels. Expect blizzard conditions over high ground and routes. A cold night with overnight lows from freezing to 2C.

    Tomorrow will be another windy day with strong to gale force westerly winds and further frequent wintry showers during the morning.

    During the afternoon the showers will become confined to the west and north west with dry and brighter conditions for the south and east.

    Stena Line services from Cairnryan to Belfast have been cancelled after a ferry collided with part of the south west Scotland terminal.

    The incident happened as the vessel was coming into dock early on Tuesday.

    Sailings between the Dumfries and Galloway port and Belfast have been suspended since the incident to allow the ship to be examined.

    In a statement, Stena Line said there were no injuries and all passengers and crew had disembarked as normal.

    National Express has pledged to keep its Dundee bus services running throughout the snowy spell forecast to hit the city.

    National Express Dundee said it would have "staff on hand" to ensure there was as little disruption to services as possible.

    The operator said 90% of buses ran as normal during the city's last major snowfall in January.

    Snow showers and freezing temperatures are forecast for Dundee through the rest of the week.
