The Lib Dems have managed also to win this seat, another of the seats that they lost last year and had previously been something of a party stronghold.

Given the result in Fife North East and in the Northern Isles it appears that the Lib Dems in Scotland have regained some of their ability to develop local strongholds north of the border.

Congratulations to Iain Gray on winning East Lothian.

You will recall that he stepped down as Labour leader after a poor performance by his party at Holyrood elections in 2011.

Asked whether Kezia Dugdale should do the same, he replied: "Absolutely not."

That appears to be a common - although not universal - view in the Labour Party. Rather they want to think, hard, about their strategy.

If they fall behind the Conservatives into second place, that rethink might gain a certain edge.

  8. How are the Greens going to fare? Let's check in with our expertpublished at 03:49 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Professor John Curtice
    Polling expert

The first 2 list results suggest that the Greens' performance in Scotland may be below their high expectations.

Their vote is up in these constituencies by just 2 points, which if replicated across Scotland as a whole would leave the party with 6%, probably insufficient for the party to win a seat in every region in Scotland.
