Professor Nicola McEwan from Edinburgh University says turnout has to be looked at in the context of other Scottish parliament elections.
Prof. McEwan says the Scottish parliament elections have never reached 60% therefore if it gets to that scale it would suggest participation we've seen in recent years.
The nation waits to find out who will be elected as MSPs in the Scottish Parliament.
In 2011, the SNP won 69 seats giving them a majority in Holyrood, Labour took 37 seats, the Conservatives had 15, the Liberal Democrats five, two seats went to the Scottish Greens and one independent.

The investigations editor of the Sunday Herald is reporting that Labour are in trouble in Eastwood which is the most difficult seat for the SNP to gain from Labour.
Here's the latest from Ingliston in Edinburgh where the ex Edinburgh South Labour MP Nigel Griffiths says "the tide is turning against the SNP in Edinburgh.
"They're set for an upset in Edinurgh Southern like they suffered at the general election"
It was of course Ian Murray won Labour's only seat in the 2015 general election here in Scotland.

Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse SNP activists are claiming that, from their own exit polling, the party has gained 55% of the vote in the area.
This would strengthen the party's position in the constituency which they gained in 2011 with Christina McKelvie beating Labour's Tom McCabe with almost 48% of the vote.
