    As the votes are counted and the results begin to roll in, Scotland's newspapers will update their front pages.

    As polls closed at 22:00, the Scottish Daily Express, external said Nicola Sturgeon has been warned the that there will be "no more excuses" as for failing to deliver for Scotland as the SNP "swept to an historic third term in the Holyrood election.

    "Victory's at hand" was the headline in the first edition of The National , externalwith a full page picture of Nicola Sturgeon and her husband. The paper said she was "on course to win her mandate".

    The first edition of the Scotsman, external said "Sturgeon 'feeling good' on course for victory".

    The Daily Star, external headline was "Five more years". It also predicted the SNP was poised to "hold Holyrood".

    The Scottish Daily Mail, external's front page said "SNP set for victory as Tories battle Labour for opposition".

    The Daily Telegraph, external said Nicola Sturgeon "could be denied" a new independence referendum.

    The Scottish Sun, externalhas not published its front page but shortly after the polls closed tweeted: "SNP on top but Tories seal second place...comfortably."

    Counting is well underway at the ice rink turned counting station at Braehead in Renfrewshire. 

    The final ballot boxes aren't expected to arrive until midnight.

    The first result - probably Paisley - is expected at around 03:30 if there are no hitches. 

    There are extra counting staff after a late finish last time around with about 400 staff on the floor.

  18. The count is underway in earnest across Scotland.......published at 23:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2016

    The counting is under way in the Scottish Parliament election.

    The first results are expected at about 02:00 on Friday, with the final result at about 08:00 - although this could be much later if counts are delayed.

    About four million people were registered to vote in the election, which will see 129 MSPs returned.

    Opinion polls ahead of the vote suggested the SNP was on course to win a second successive majority.

    If the polls are correct, it would see the SNP form the Scottish government for the third time in a row, with the party's leader, Nicola Sturgeon, continuing as first minister.

    The SNP won 56 out of 59 seats at the UK general election a year ago.
