  4. Two headlines: SNP may not make overall majority and the Tories look to beat Labourpublished at 06:28 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Professor John Curtice
    Polling expert

As the list results for Scotland now begin to come in two major headlines are emerging.

     1) It now looks as though the SNP are at risk of failing to secure a second overall majority in the Holyrood Parliament and will have to form a minority administration doubtless with the support of the Greens.

     2) The Cons now look as though they will emerge comfortably ahead of Labour in terms of seats in the Holyrood Parliament, although Labour are slightly ahead of the Cons in terms of votes won on the constituency ballot the Cons outpolled Labour in terms of constituency seats.

Meanwhile the Cons look as though they will be 3 or 4 points ahead of Labour on the crucial list vote.

Meanwhile although the Lib Dems have scored a couple of spectacular gains in the constituency seats, the Greens look as though they will outpoll them on the list vote and thus just displace the Lib Dems as the fourth largest party at Holyrood.

  17. Prof. Curtice says SNP have been victim of 'exaggerated expectation'published at 05:49 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

Professor John Curtice says the SNP have been the victim of exaggerated expectation and "maybe a little misguided campaign talk".

    John Curtice

Prof Curtice says it now looks as though the party is not doing as well as it did five years ago and it looks unlikely they are going to get as many as the 69 seats they got last time around.

He says if the early list results are correct the Conservatives are the favourites to be the main opposition in Scotland.
