    Green MSP Ross Greer

Green MSP Ross Greer argues that "mainstream education is not the same as inclusive education.

Mr Greer says: "Often the reality is far from inclusive."

He explains that: "Pupils are attending mainstream schools but not being included.

"This can be not being able to take part in school trips, sporting activities, or being excluded from class."

Mr Greer says: "Since 2010 education spending has dropped. It has led to a drop of over 500 additional support need teachers and staff."

    Conservative MSP Jeremy Balfour

Conservative MSP Jeremy Balfour looks to his own experience at school during his speech.

Mr Balfour says: "We're not just talking about in the classroom.

"But what happens in the playground is perhaps more important.

"How a child is treated in the lunchroom. How we treat children in regards to PE is equally important.

"I could not play football or cricket, but the teachers could see that I could take part as an umpire or other position. I was included and was able to build friendships."

Mr Balfour also speaks about the "postcode lottery".

He says: "Some parents do not want their children to go into a mainstream school and instead go to another school."

SNP MSP George Adam says when his son James went to school himself, it was a fantastic school and it offered so much, but it wasn't the right school for him.

Mr Adam says James struggled with primary school right from the very beginning.

He says James, who went through school before the parliament reconvened, was treated in a less than professional way.

Mr Adam says his son was diagnosed with dyspraxia and was sent to a specialist school and this caused him embarrassment.

He says his son would probably kill him if he saw this debate but says it affects him to this day.

We have now had 16 years of mainstream education for children with disabilities in Scotland.

After decades of struggle for a more equal society, it is now presumed that every disabled child will get the opportunity to attend a mainstream school where possible.

However, what does real inclusion mean in practice and is the system a success? Or are disabled children drifting to the back of the class?
