    Education Secretary John Swinney tells the parliament: "The Standards of Scotland Schools Act , externalwas one of the first acts of legislation passed by this parliament."

    Mr Swinney continues: "We now have the first generation of people who have experienced mainstream education. And we are seeing the fruits of those young people in our society.

    "The key point of the legislation is children and young people have rights and should get the support when they need it to help them overcome any obstacles to learning.

    "We should not forget than we can and do make to the people of Scotland."

    Mr Swinney uses his motion to say mainstreaming has featured at the heart of Holyrood's commitment to inclusive education since 2000.

    He welcomes that successive administrations have created and strengthened this commitment.

    The education secretary says there is a need to learn from current practice to support additional needs.

    He highlights the launch of the consultation on Excellence and Equality for All: Guidance on the Presumption of Mainstreaming, which seeks to bridge the gap between legislation, policy and the practical experience of children, young people and their families.

    Mr Swinney says this should lead to pupils having equitable access to a quality education that meets their needs and helps them to achieve their full potential.

    The ability to teach children with additional support needs (ASN) in mainstream Scottish schools is under threat, the country's largest teaching union claimed last December.

    The EIS union said cuts to the number of ASN teachers meant pupils' needs were not being met as well as they should be.

    And it said ASN teachers were reporting a lack of equipment and resources.

    The employment of support staff is the responsibility of local councils.

    A wide range of factors, external can lead to children having a need for additional support, including learning difficulties, family circumstances, disability or health needs, and social and emotional factors.

    The most recent figures then, external showed there are currently 170,329 pupils with additional support needs in Scottish schools, of whom 162,034 were in mainstream schools.

    Ms Harper says: "It is estimated there are 35,000 people across Scotland living with type 1 diabetes.

    "We ask professionals to look out for weight control rather than blood glucose control.

    "Research shows that women in particular are at high risk. That same research also show that men with type 1 have a much higher drive to lose weight than their non diabetic counterparts."
