MSPs voted for a net-zero emissions target by 2045 in law, as well as agreeing to target a 75% reduction by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

The Climate Change Bill - was passed by 113 votes to 0 at Holyrood.

Ministers agreed to a Labour amendment to up the interim target, with members agreeing to target a 75% reduction by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

However, a Green bid to increase this goal to 80% was heavily defeated.

The Scottish government's targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions have been strengthened, as MSPs voted to put down a "net-zero" target in law.

The Climate Change Bill - which aims to have all emissions offset by 2045 - was passed by 113 votes to 0 at Holyrood.

Ministers agreed to a Labour amendment to up the interim target, with members agreeing to target a 75% reduction by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

However, a Green bid to increase this goal to 80% was heavily defeated.

SNP MSP John Mason told the chamber a lack of data on the number or location of tumble dryers means hundreds of thousands of them are still in use eight weeks after recall began due to fire risk, as he began his member's debate on product recalls.

He highlights the success rate of product recall is low, at around 10-20%.

This is because consumers are rarely aware of them and it is difficult to trace customers, he explains.

Mr Mason welcomes a commitment from the UK government to introduce a register and asks about discussions had with the Scottish government.

Business Minister Jamie Hepburn readily and heartily endorses the sentiments in Mr Mason's motion and he thanks Electrical Safety First, external.

MSPs pass the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Bill, external, which seeks to set a target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2045.

The bill will also set an interim goal to cut emissions by 75% by 2030 and create a climate change citizens assembly.

113 MSPs backed the bill, but there were six abstentions.

Roseanna Cunningham says the government has continually sought consensus on this bill, reflecting the need to work together to tackle the issue.

The climate change secretary hopes the bill will pass with the same consensus as the 2009 Act, adding she regrets the tone of Mark Ruskell because this is the strongest, toughest legislation of anywhere in the world.

Finlay Carson says he believes this legislation will be the springboard that ensures Scotland will continue to lead on tackling climate change.

The Tory MSP welcomes the amendment on the nitrogen balance sheet, which highlights the contribution Scottish farmers are making to tackling climate change.

Closing for Labour, Sarah Boyack says what has been agreed today is not a limit but the absolute minimum we must reach.

She calls for more focus on making homes more energy efficient, which will help meet targets on climate change as well as tackle fuel poverty.

MSPs have backed an amendment to the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Bill from Labour MSP Claudia Beamish, calling for a new interim target of cutting emissions by 75% by 2030.

They rejected the more ambitious 80% cut proposed by the Greens.

An amendment from Green MSP Mark Ruskell, proposing a citizens assembly on climate change, ws however unanimously backed.

Scotland's current target, set in the Climate Change Act, is to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050 compared with benchmark levels from 1990.

This bill will set the new target of net-zero by 2045, if passed, as expected, at decision time.

Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur says it is regrettable Mark Ruskell adopted the tone he has.

Mr McArthur says: "I'm delighted that parliament has voted today to increase the interim target to 75% by 2030."

He congratulates Claudia Beamish on her amendment that achieved this.

The Lib Dem MSP says the 75% target sets the right balance in terms of achievability .

Tory MSP Finlay Carson accuses the Greens of "grandstanding" on this issue rather than looking for consensus.

Mr Ruskell says the climate emergency requires emergency action.

This bill will not create real and lasting change communities need, he states.

We will not vote against this bill today - but we will also not endorse it because it does not challenge the status quo he concludes.
