We know that there are many pressures on our natural land, but it is only through surveys such as this that we can measure if those pressures are damaging our environment and then look at what we can do to protect our wildlife."

Peter Le Maistre, the union's president, says the cold and wet weather has meant the early crop of Jersey Royals have been "lost" because of frost, although only in a small area.

He says normally most growers would be harvesting by the end of March, but that deadline has been pushed back to next week.

Mr Le Maistre says this has a direct impact on farmers, who will be a month behind on being paid.

He said Jersey Royals companies were managing the situation to make sure there would not be a shortage of spuds in the coming months.

HSC are expecting incidences of flu to remain high in the coming weeks, and are appealing to the public not to attend the hospital unless they absolutely have to.

They are also reminding people over the age of 65 and those with certain medical conditions that they are still eligible to receive the flu jab.

New software is being introduced that will make it easier for harbour users to book and pay for services, a spokesman said,

He said the States body was "confident" the investment would pay off and provide a much improved system, using the latest ports and marine technology.

There will be a web-based service for shipping agents, while leisure boaters will able to do everything online from registering a vessel to changing berthing arrangements.

Guernsey Harbours said it hoped the system would go live in June, but initially it would run alongside the old one to ensure a smooth transition over the summer.

  16. Duty for States to protect 'vulnerable people' put forwardpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Chris Rayner
    BBC Radio Jersey Political Reporter

It is hoped a new set of duties spelling out what Jersey's politicians are expected to do in office will adhere to a recommendation from the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry.

    States Assembly, Jersey

Last year, the inquiry panel said the oaths of office sworn by States members should reflect their responsibilities for children in care.

But a States committee says this would be too complicated to change the oath, and instead, want to include responsibilities for all "vulnerable people" in a new list of duties, external.

Deputy Judy Martin, from the Privileges and Procedures Committee, said the recommendation from the inquiry was "too narrow".

She added that a change to the oath would have to be put to the Privy Council, as with all Jersey's laws, whereas their proposed changes to the existing oath could be simply added on by the States.

The Committee for Employment and Social Security said it had been working on the laws with Dr Shivaun Quinlivan and Dr Lucy-Ann Buckley from the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Deputy Michelle Le Clerc said using foreign legislation as a model would help the island "progress faster than writing the law from scratch".

The Irish laws were based themselves on the Australian system.

"No model is perfect, but we believe that the Irish/Australian model will be a sound starting point for Guernsey," Ms Le Clerc said.
