Jan Kuttelwascher said his committee had a policy letter ready on air links, but was forced to withdraw it by the States.

  7. Jersey's new skate park: Where should it go?published at 12:13 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Four sites were put forward by the Jersey Skatepark Association (JSA) at a public meeting last night.

The association, made up of locals who use the facilities, has been working with the States of Jersey planning department on possible sites around Jersey.

    Possible sites:

    • Les Jardin de la Mer, St Helier
    • Springfield Sports Stadium, St Helier
    • Le Quennevais Sports Centre, St Brelade
    • Millbrook park, St Lawrence

Members of the public also suggested People's Park.

    But what do skaters think?

    Quote Message

Best bet would be to go for la Frigate [Les Jardin de la Mer] because its nice, it's on the beach front. At night time you can relax, you can listen to the waves, it's nice and chilled. Skating came from surfing so that would bring a bigger hype to it."

    Charlie Kilpatrick

Zach Marett, also a skater, said he was "apprehensive" when he heard PMR Leisure representative Penny Lockhead say some of the sites faced "technical difficulties" in terms of ownership and planning regulations.

The company is helping the JSA, States of Jersey and Jersey Sport form plans for the skate park.

    Quote Message

You're looking at something that's an Olympic sport, you're going to have technical challenges whatever you do. They need to let everyone know that you might get a small skatepark to begin with, but what you actually want is going to take a lot longer."

    Zach Marett

But Karl Payne, the chair of the association, said the meeting was "quite positive."

He has called on States members and planners to "listen to the youth and listen to what the community is saying" on the issue.

  9. Plans for first-time buyer homes rejected by Statespublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

Plans for 65 homes for first-time buyers in St Peter have been rejected by Jersey's Environment and Planning Minister.

The States-owned company Andium Homes put forward the plans for a site opposite the George De Carteret pub.

At a public inquiry, an independent planning inspector suggested the development should not go ahead, as it went against guidelines for the use of land in Jersey. Planning minister, Deputy Steve Luce, rejected the application because it would "harm" the protected green zone land, the local character and the natural environment of the area.

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

The newly formed Jersey Skateparks Association is working with the States planning department on four potential sites in St Helier for a new "long term" skate park for Jersey.

    Skate parks meeting

At a public meeting last night at the Town Hall, members of the skating community, local residents and politicians met the association to discuss the plans.

The association, currently chaired by Karl Payne, said it wanted to grow its membership and tender a first design for a "world class" skate park.

Representatives from Jersey Youth Services, Mind Jersey, States sports facilities and St Helier parks pledged their support for the project.

Also in attendance were St Helier deputies Scott Wickenden, Russell Labey and Judy Martin, who expressed strong support for the site at Les Jardins de la Mer, though the association said it would not be selecting a preferred choice at this stage.

Local skaters have also called for longer opening hours at the current skate park in St Helier harbour, and improved facilities at Millennium Park.

  17. St Johns Road improvements 'cannot be prioritised'published at 10:10 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Jersey's government "cannot prioritise" road safety funding for a St Helier street residents are branding "dangerous."

    St Johns Road

St Johns road has been called a "speed trap," by locals, who say larger vehicles frequently mounted the kerb due to the small pavements, endangering pedestrians.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Infrastructure said: "St Johns Road has been looked at for different reasons a number of times over the years. Previous suggestions to make it one-way were discounted due to the impact on residents and some difficult accesses.

"Whilst there have been injuries caused by road traffic collisions in recent years, numbers are low when compared to other roads in St Helier and across Jersey, so we cannot prioritise road safety funding to this road.

"The results of three speed surveys in different locations and at different times on St Johns Road over the last decade show average speeds range from 21mph-26mph, which is low for a 30mph road."

  19. New taxi meter restrictions introducedpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

New laws will allow the use of taxi meters in Jersey to be monitored more closely.

Meters will now have to meet a higher standard, and new technology make it easier for the government to look back at performance.

The new meter requirements from the Department for Infrastructure include:

    • Allowing the inspector of motor traffic to obtain data
    • Ensuring the display is in English
    • An anti-tampering device added
    • Ensuring the meter will not display a higher charge than the maximum set for the relevant date and time
    • The capability of being measured over a specific distance

The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel said, “These new requirements for taxi-cab fare measuring devices will not only give passengers peace of mind that the meter is being operated fairly but it will also provide us with valuable information on taxi-cab activity.”
