    Politicians and neighbours of a development in Guernsey, external are voicing their objections to plans to alter a house in the area.

    Deputy Jonathan le Tocq is one of those voicing his objections to the scheme near the Route de Cobo and Cobo Coast Road filter, which he is describing as "daft".

    Plans to demolish the house and garage, build a new house and erect a new granite wall along the west coast road boundary have been submitted to planning.

    But neighbours say the new build will be out of keeping with the surrounding area and that there will be "major push back from the community" if this scheme goes ahead.

    Those who want to comment on the proposed development have until Tuesday next week to get in touch with the planning department, external.

    The BBC has approached the planning applicant for comment.

    Jersey's Serena Guthrie helped England's netballers to a dominant start as they beat Scotland 74-28 in their Commonwealth Games opener.

    But Guthrie, who is playing at her second Commonwealth Games, suffered a painful-looking ankle injury and could be a doubt for England's next game against Malawi on Friday.

    A cafe worker at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre who stood up for someone with learning disabilities is being praised by the States' Adult Community Services.

    Maisie Lihou, 17, saw a group of people laughing at a man who was dancing in the cafe and told them to leave, saying she found the behaviour unacceptable.

    She said: "Seeing it happen to other people is really upsetting. I want people to feel safe and welcome when they come to the cafe, and if you see something like that you're not going to feel welcome to sit down and have a drink.

    "I wanted to make sure he felt comfortable and happy in a public space," she added.

    Adult Community Services manager, Mandy Mackleworth, called it a "brave" act. "Society needs to be more accepting of the people we support."

  4. £2.5m paid out in 'compromise agreements' to States' staffpublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    The amount paid out by the States of Guernsey in "compromise agreements" to its staff has reached £2.5m in the last five years, an Access to Public Information Response, external has revealed.

    The reasons why a compromise agreement can be sought by the States include a "breakdown in relationships", "lack of trust and confidence" or "inadequate performance" from staff.

    Since the start of 2013, 85 agreements were reached by the States of Guernsey.

    In 2017, £430,000 was paid by the States, equivalent to around 0.17% of the annual pay bill to staff.

    The States of Guernsey says it prides itself on being a "good and fair employer," and there are occasions where the "best solution" for the employer and employee is to end the relationship.

    A spokesman added a compromise agreement remains "an appropriate mechanism" to help bring matters to a swift resolution.

    New speed limits have been signed off for some of Jersey's roads, external.

    The changes affect roads in St Clement, St John, St Lawrence, St Peter and St Brelade.

    Most of the public roads in St Brelade will be limited to 30mph (48km/h) or lower, with a large number of rural roads changing from 40mph (64km/h) to 30mph.

    The changes will come into force on 10 April.

    The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel said: “Reviewing speed limits to ensure they are suited to the roads, balancing the needs of all road users, is the first step towards our objective to make the island’s roads safer for everyone."

    Changes to speed limits in other parishes are expected later this year as part of an island-wide review to be completed by the end of 2019.

    But with the likes of Olympic champion Max Whitlock and teams from England, Canada and Scotland still to compete later this morning it seems unlikely that his total score of 75.450 will be enough to make Saturday's final.

    Guernsey's Tom Hollingsworth and Jersey's Harry Shalamon have both progressed to the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

    Shalamon finished fifth in his heat in a time of 56.41 to go through as the 13th-fastest qualifier.

    Hollingsworth's time of 57.61 saw him finish sixth in his heat and grab the final berth in the semi-finals, which begin at 12:20 BST.

    Elsewhere Guernsey's Miles Munro finished fifth in his heats for the 50m butterfly, missing out on a place in the semi-finals by 0.08 seconds while Jersey's Gemma Atherley finished fifth in her heats in the 200m freestyle, which wasn't enough to earn a place in the final.

    Guernsey's Josh Lewis was the top Channel Islands performer in the triathlon at the Commonwealth Games.

    The 25-year-old came 24th in the triathlon, two places ahead of Jersey's Ollie Turner.

    The event was won by South Africa's Henri Schoeman as England's Brownlee brothers surprisingly missed out on the medals.

    Jersey's triples team of Derek Boswell, Malcolm de Sousa and Ross Davis caused an upset on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games bowls as they beat Australia in their opening game.

    They beat the home side 21-18 and and followed it up by hammering Botswana 27-4 to go top of their pool after their opening two matches.

    Meanwhile Guernsey's world champion Lucy Beere was beaten 21-15 in her opening round-robin match with Wales' Laura Daniels, but came back to beat Jersey's Rachel MacDonald 21-12 in her second match of the day.

    It means MacDonald ends the opening day with two losses, after she was beaten by Scotland's Caroline Brown 21-13 in her first match.

    The first ever boxer to represent Guernsey at a Commonwealth Games has been beaten in the first round.

    Alderney's Billy Le Poullain lost on points to Pakistan's Gul Zaib in the first round of the welterweight division.

    "I'm devastated," he told BBC Guernsey.

    "I under-performed, it was a bad day in the office for me."

    The 22-year-old added that the atmosphere at the Games may have got to him:

    "Performing like I have today I'm not going to go as far as I believe I should.

    "I need to get back to the drawing board, work harder than ever in the gym, do as I'm told from the coaches in the corner and not let the atmosphere get the better of me.

    "I felt a bit flat, maybe I warmed up for a bit to long, but no excuses, the lad from Pakistan was better than me this afternoon."
