On 14 August 2011, Damian Rzeszowski, who died in prison on Saturday, killed six people, including his wife and two children, in a knife attack at the family's St Helier flat.

At his trial, just over a year later, he was cleared of murder, but admitted manslaughter with diminished responsibility.

One of the victims was his five-year-old daughter Kinga, reported to have been stabbed "more than a dozen times."

As well as his wife and children, Rzeszowski also killed Marek Garstka, 56, Marta De La Haye, 34, and Julia De La Haye, aged five.

During his trial, Jersey's Royal Court heard that Rzeszowski's marriage had been under strain after his wife confessed to a two-month affair. Rzeszowski also threatened to take his own life, the court was told.

Psychiatrist Dr Dale Harrison said Rzeszowski was hearing voices during the incident, and "could not remember what happened."

A spokeswoman for the States of Jersey Police said the force had been notified about the death of Rzeszowski. "An investigation into his death will be carried out by the UK Police SOJP will not be issuing any further information."

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Islanders are being offered a 25% discount on electric bicycles in an initiative backed by both the States of Guernsey and local cycle shops.

The scheme is designed to encourage people to make "more environmentally friendly and healthy transport choices," a States spokesman said.

The budget for the scheme is £100,000, with the States offering 20% of the subsidy on e-cycles up to the value of £1,500, and local retailers making up the additional 5%.

Deputy Barry Brehaut, President of the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure, said e-cycles were "ideally suited" to Guernsey due to the island's geometry, size and road network.

This initiative will help further establish e-cycles as a viable alternative to the motor vehicle for a wide section of the community, including those members of the public less able to cycle longer distances or up hills without some form of powered assistance."

  10. States 'did not support' further air linkspublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 3 April 2018

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Proposals for further air routes from Guernsey to London City, Luton and Dubin, were not supported by the States, an airline has said.

Last year Blue Islands, which is part of the Flybe franchise, claims it approached the island's government to replace the Guernsey-London City route after Aurigny withdrew its operations.

The airline said after a series of "productive discussions" with the Committee for Economic Development it decided not to progress further with the project.

A spokesman said, despite islanders "continued desire for new routes" airlines cannot undertake the financial risk of losses without States support.

Deputy Charles Parkinson, President of the Committee for Economic Development, said all decisions made on supporting new air routes were considered on the basis that taxpayer investment provided "an economic return".

On the London City route, he added: "The committee is continuing to actively explore with all interested operators how that route can be re-established."
