    The organisers of the Guernsey Air Display say the RAF aerobatic team has confirmed their place in this year's line-up.

    The display takes place on 12 September - the same day as the Jersey International Air Display.

    A Guernsey homeowner said she was "very surprised" after unearthing a classic car buried in her back garden.

    Tracy Ward and her father Brian Russell were digging out a rockery when the pair started to find pieces of metal.

    Further excavation revealed they had discovered a whole car - with local experts saying it is a Daimler, likely from the 1940s or 1950s.

    The top civil servant in Guernsey's Education, Sport and Culture Committee believes it is best, in his role, not to know anything about education.

    Gus Paterson, a former director of civil aviation, took over as chief secretary in February.

    Mr Paterson says teaching professionals are best placed to run schools and says his focus will be promoting and implementing change.

    "What you do need to know is about change and about management," he said. "I think what I've very quickly learnt is that we do have a lot of people on the island who do know a lot about education.

    "The important thing for me is the right conversations are being had, I'm listening to the right people, and we let the professionals dictate what we do in our schools."

    It's just a few hours away from the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

    Team Jersey is preparing to join the parade, led by Dan Halksworth, who is the first person to compete at three different games in three different sports.

    He says he's feeling the pressure of the ceremony, but is glad to be a part of it.

    "I'm not one to be the centre of attention so I'm a little bit nervous about it, but it's a big honour and I'm very proud to be doing it.

    "I'm a proud islander so I'm really looking forward to the experience and I hope I don't embarrass myself."

    A man has found an old car buried in a garden in Guernsey.

    Brian Russell was helping his daughter, Tracy Ward, to dig out a rockery in her back garden when he found a piece of metal, which turned out to be part of a car.

    Further excavation in the St Pierre Du Bois garden revealed the chassis, engine block, the front bumper, window frames and many other parts.

    Experts say the number plate and gear box plate help to confirm it as being a Daimler, most likely from the 1940's or 1950's.

    Heather Fattorini from the Guernsey Old Car Club has been to take a look and said: "I think it was possibly somebody who thought they'd keep it and do it up, and maybe thought they can't be bothered.

    "There are various bits we can't see because it's still in the bottom end of the rockery."

    St Peter have gone above St Ouen into second place in Jersey's Premiership after crushing bottom side Grouville 9-0.

    Ben Gallichan and Jake Prince each scored hat-tricks while Luke Campbell, Sam Dewhurst and Sam Luce got the others for the western parish side.

    St Peter are now three points behind leaders St Paul's having played two more games - the two sides are due to meet on 28 April.

    Guernsey's England youth player Maya le Tissier is to leave the island in the summer as she aims to further her career.

    The 16-year-old, who became the first girl to play in the boy's Under 16 Muratti last month, will move to study in England.

    She has yet to decide on which club to play for, but says a number are interested: "It's a massive step forward.

    "It'll make everything a lot easier and I'm looking forward to it, it should be a good challenge.

    "It's quite a difficult decision because all the clubs bring different things to the table."

    A project to help men in Guernsey socialise through making and repairing all sorts of objects in wood, metal or fabric is "making progress", organisers say.

    The Men's Shed, an old packing shed in St Peter, is being refurbished and kitted out largely by volunteers, with money from the Pargiter Trust and the Guernsey charity MUG.

    Project manager Marcel Lenormand says it is targeted at men in retirement who will be able to go there to create things and interact socially.

    It is part of a wider project for all islanders called "make a space".

    Mr Lenormand says the Men's Shed has already encouraged participants to talk about and seek advice for personal issues such as medical problems.

    A parade and ceremony could be organised for the Red Arrows in Jersey to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, and acknowledge 50 years of attendances by the team.

    Deputy Mike Higgins, organiser of the Jersey International Air Display, made the announcement alongside the news the team would return to the display this year.

    Deputy Higgins said the 12 September - the day before the air show - had been put forward as a provisional date for the ceremony.

    The team has appeared at every Jersey air display since they were formed in 1965, excluding 2017, organisers said.

    A group of politicians in Jersey is calling for the duties of States members to officially include protecting the most vulnerable people, external in the island.

    The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry found the States to be a "neglectful substitute parent" to children in care, and the Privileges and Procedures Committee has put forward proposals to make safeguarding children and adults "a formal commitment" by the States Assembly.

    "Setting out elected States members’ duties in this way will improve the transparency and openness of the Assembly," the committee said.

    "The public will know in broad terms what States members are elected to do."

    A battery for an electric livestock fence was stolen, Guernsey Police say.

    It happened in a field some time between 23:00 on 30 March and 09:00 on 31 March in the Frie Baton area, St Saviour.

    A spokesman asked livestock owners to "secure items of value" which may be stored in fields, stables or sheds.

    A new group hoping to add its opinion to public policy debates in the Channel Islands has emerged.

    The Channel Islands Humanists, which is supported by Humanists UK, external, says it aims to promote secular values in Jersey and Guernsey.

    Andrew Copson, chief executive of Humanists UK, says the organisation wants to offer its perspective on the "ethical issues" of the day, including assisted dying and reproductive and sexual health rights.
