Schoolchildren had helped draw up a shortlist of possible new names for the Wave Centre in Maryport

A leisure centre in Cumbria is to be renamed after hundreds of people took part in a vote.

The Wave in Maryport will be called Maryport Activity Centre, which was the choice of 30% of voters.

The facility will officially get its new name once building work is completed in the summer, Cumberland Council said.

School pupils helped draw up a shortlist, which also included White Star Centre and Maryport Adventure Hub.

As part of the refurbishment, a new play centre and studio spaces are to be installed alongside changes to the climbing attractions and gym.

Plans to include a new swimming pool were dropped earlier this year with the council blaming "spiralling costs".

The colour of new direction signs was also put to the vote and blue was chosen.

The council said the new signs would also feature emblems of the town's lighthouse.

Labour Leader of Cumberland Council, Mark Fryer, said: "I think Maryport Activity Centre is a fitting description for this building which is one of the town's landmarks.

"I cannot wait to see the new family-friendly attractions in place once its transformation is complete this summer."

A total of £12m is being spent on regeneration projects in the town including turning the ex-Carlton Cinema into a cultural hub and moving the Maritime Museum into the former Christ Church building.
