Plans to build a new housing estate and primary school in Oxford have been given outline planning approval.

The proposed plans at Barton by Oxford City Council and developer Grosvenor would see 885 homes built.

The development includes a supermarket, sports pavilion, allotments and possibly a hotel.

Ed Skeates, of Grosvenor, said: "This is a very important milestone for the project and will provide much-needed homes."

A link road for buses across the A40 could connect the new estate to Oxford.

A series of detailed planning applications from selected housebuilders will now be submitted.

The first phase of the housing estate could be ready by late 2015.
