Work on new Chichester A27 footbridge begins

The Highways Agency has released an image of what the bridge will look like

A new footbridge is being installed across the A27 at a site where three pedestrians died in the space of two months.

Work is to begin later on the bridge near the Whyke roundabout in Chichester.

The A27 will be closed in both directions from 20:00 GMT until 06:00 on Sunday.

Peter Phillips, from the Highways Agency, said the bridge was "great news for drivers and pedestrians".

Two homeless men who died at the spot in December 2011 were crossing the A27 to get to St Joseph's hostel.

A third man died in January 2012 after he was hit by a car.

Mr Phillips said: "Safety is a top priority for the Highways Agency and by installing this footbridge we will be providing pedestrians with a safe way to cross the busy A27."

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be put in place during the work.

Some of the footpaths may be temporarily diverted.
