HS2: Actor Geoffrey Palmer against high speed rail plan

Actor Geoffrey Palmer claimed the HS2 rail line that would pass his home in the Chilterns would be the most expensive railway in the world, equivalent to the cost of 60 hospitals.

The star of Butterflies and As Time Goes By said the government figures do not add up as he warned to the prime minister to "stop this vanity project and leave our countryside alone."

Stephanie Boston, the director of Conserve the Chilterns and Countryside, then debated with Conservative MP Sajid Javid and Labour's Liam Byrne in then Daily Politics studio.

Previously, Pete Waterman made a film for the programme speaking up for the project, that should initially link London and Birmingham and later be extended to the cities of northern England.
