10p tax rate call from Conservative MP Robert Halfon

A Conservative MP is calling on the coalition to bring back the 10p tax band which was first introduced - and then scrapped - by the last Labour government.

Robert Halfon said he wanted lower taxes for everyone, not just the wealthy, as he called for a 10% rate of tax on earnings up to £12,000 a year initially.

The MP for Harlow said Gordon Brown's 2008 decision to scrap the rate he had introduced nine years earlier cost low-income workers "hundreds of pounds a year".

In February, Labour leader Ed Miliband said Gordon Brown was wrong to get rid of the tax band and said he wanted to bring it back.
