Archive: Queen's first televised Christmas message

Archive footage showed BBC crews preparing to televise the Queen's Christmas message for the first time.

Millions of viewers across the world were able to watch the speech live from Sandringham in 1957.

Technicians had to put up special telescopic masts and dish-like reflectors to connect the Norfolk estate to Broadcasting House in London.

In the message, Her Majesty wished viewers a happy Christmas and said: "I hope 1958 may bring you God's blessing and all the things you long for."
