World Cup 2022: Controversial World Cup finally kicks off

An inflatable World Cup trophy with pyrotechnics sat in the centre of the pitch during the opening ceremony of the Fifa World Cup 2022 in Al Khor, Qatar.

Before the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador, Jungkook of BTS performed surrounded by lots of dancers in silver outfits.

Performers surrounded by giant football shirts of all the nations competing in the tournament took to the stage to entertain the gathering fans before kick off.

Inflatable mascots of previous World Cups were included as part of the celebrations...

...The Qatar 2022 mascot La'eeb also joined the party.

There was lots of dancing before the match began with performers from all around the world taking part in the event.

All dancing to the beat of a drummer who was centre stage.

Performers danced with what look like lightsabers in a choreographed routine.

There were camels in the arena too before the big match between host nation Qatar and South American side Ecuador began.

Fans enjoyed a light show and performance from the dancers on the pitch before kick off.

At the Fifa fan festival, onlookers without a ticket for the opening match got a fireworks extravaganza instead.

There were fireworks illuminating the night sky above the stadium as kick off approached.

The entertainment over, the teams emerged from the tunnel and the national anthems of Qatar and Ecuador were played. The Fifa World Cup 2022 had officially begun.
