Luke Littler has become world number one for the first time, after winning the Grand Slam of Darts.

It comes after he beat rival Luke Humphries on Sunday night with a score of 16-11 at the competition in Wolverhampton.

The rankings are decided by the amount of prize money a player has won from ranking tournaments over a two-year period.

At age 18, Littler is now the youngest Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) world number one.

Luke Littler made headlines around the world aged 16 after becoming the youngest player to reach the final of the World Darts Championship - the biggest event in the sport.

In that competition he finished as runner up, losing out to the same competitor, Luke Humphries, but a year later, aged 17, he came back and won.

This made him the youngest ever world champion in the history of the sport.

Now his latest success makes him even more of a record breaker.

"I am the best in the world, I can finally say it," Littler said after the final.

"Now I'm number one, I'm hungry to stay there. I want to be there for the next few years."

He added: "There's going to be a target on my back from Luke and all the other players. It's made me more hungry."

Luke Littler earned £1.85m over the past two years, overtaking Luke Humphries.

Former BDO world champion Mark Webster also praised Littler for his skill.

He told Sky Sports: "Being world number one is some achievement for Luke Littler and doing it in less than two years is something remarkable.

"He knows how to get it done. He doesn't have bad spells - he does lose in some tournaments and it will continue to happen - but he's just a brilliant talent."
