Style it Out: New CBBC show about sustainable fashion for kids

Do you enjoy fashion and clothes? Well there's a new CBBC show starting in January all about it.

Style It Out will see nine fashion-loving kids from across the UK compete in a styling competition, hoping to win the prize of having their designs showcased at London Fashion Week.

It's all about creativity and sustainability too, as the designers have to use pre-loved, vintage, second-hand and rescued materials.

Sustainable clothing is increasingly becoming more important to shoppers as people become aware of the environmental damage the fashion industry can cause.

What is fast fashion?

Fast fashion is the quick turnover of fashion trends and cheap, mass-produced clothing being made quickly.

People have lots of clothes, sometimes unworn in their wardrobes and according to research by Oxfam (2019) the UK throws away up to 11 million items a week.

Making clothes uses natural resources, a lot of water, and releases greenhouse gas emissions which damage the planet and cause climate change.

The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions.

There are other factors which affect the environment too including many clothes ending up in landfill.

Many shoppers want more sustainable clothing to try and protect the environment.

CBBC's Style It Out

The show will feature celebrity judges like Katya Jones from Strictly Come Dancing

The new CBBC show says sustainability is at its core. The kids aged 10 to 14 will use pre-loved and recycled materials to create their designs.

Each week they'll go head to head in different challenges, from making red-carpet outfits, to more small designs. The contestants might even find themselves styling their teacher, nan or celebrity.

Emma Willis, host of The Voice, will present and stylists to the stars Ayishat Akanbi and Jorge Antonio will be judging. There's also weekly celebrity judges including Tilly Lockey, Molly Rainford and Katya Jones.

Emma Willis said the show is a chance for the children to "express themselves in a creative, fun and fashionable way," and there's also loads in the show not just fashion including suitability.

Willis adds, "sustainable fashion should be important to everybody", she says she tries not to over buy clothes and she'll always pass them on to someone or give her clothes to charity and they might even have been used in the show, so watch out for that.
