King Charles and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, have both left hospital separately today - after having surgery recently.

The King, having spent three nights in hospital, walked out of the London Clinic, and waved to cameras with his wife, Queen Camilla, before getting into his car.

Earlier in the day, Princess Catherine left the same hospital, but did so privately, returning to rest at home having had abdominal surgery almost two weeks ago.

Following the King's operation, Buckingham Palace said the monarch will now reschedule his public engagements to allow for a period of recovery.

It is not known how long the King will be pausing his official visits but the medical treatment he has received isn't thought to be significant enough to require what is known as "counsellors of state", when someone in the Royal Family stands in for a king or queen if they are unwell.

Earlier in the day on Monday, Princess Catherine left the London Clinic, having spent 13 nights there since her operation.

The exact details of her surgery has not been revealed, but the princess will need several months of recovery.

Kensington Palace said the princess would "continue her recovery" from home - which is expected to be away from central London at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor where she lives with Prince William and their children.

During her stay in hospital Princess Catherine was visited in hospital by her husband Prince William and their three children.

She was also visited by the King before he had his own procedure on Friday.

The King had been in hospital after being treated for a non-cancerous enlarged prostate.

The prostate is found below the bladder and the condition is common in older men, according to the NHS.
