Manchester United's Carrington training grounds have had a big upgrade to help improve players' performance and wellbeing.

The upgrade took around 12 months to complete, and cost the club around £50 million, according to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who part-owns the football club.

"Manchester United is one of the most recognised brands in the world. The club has to compete at the highest level," he said. "A world-class training facility won't take us to that position alone but one of the key ingredients is a modern facility. Now we have one." said Sir Ratcliffe.

But what has changed? Well, quite a lot! Take a look below to find out...

The first team's exercise gym has had some major upgrades, including equipment that can measure their physical condition and performance in real time

There are even 'smart urinals' which can instantly analyse a player's wee, to see if they need to drink more water.

Alongside the gym there are four pools - one to swim in, a cold plunge, hot plunge and another with an underwater treadmill, and a sauna and steam room.

Between the gym and the pools is a 'high altitude room' which has bikes and rowing machines where the player's oxygen levels can be adjusted.

Next to the work-out area, is a medical treatment area which includes machines like MRI, CT and whole body scanners.

As well as an update to the player's workout facilities, the players were also asked if there was anything else they would like adding to the grounds, but apparently they gave so many suggestions that Sir Ratcliffe had to tell them to stop.

Some of the ideas that did make it, include a barber area, for players to get a haircut at the grounds.

However, it does not come with a hairdresser, the players have to bring their own ones in.

Next to the barber's room is a slightly bigger area that houses a Formula 1 racing car simulator.

There is also a 'cinema-style' room where players are shown tactics and replays as part of pre-match preparation and post-match debriefs.

Finally, in the first-team dressing room each player has a touchscreen where individual messages can be sent by the coaches or sports science team and routines for the day can be planned.

However, some fans have voiced their frustration that the club has spent £50 million on re-doing the training grounds, when it has been reported that hundreds of people have lost their jobs at the club over the last year, in an effort to cut costs and save money.

As of 30 June 2024, Manchester United had 1,140 people who worked for them.

Since then 250 employees lost their jobs in 2024 during the first round of cuts, and in May 2025 Sir Ratcliffe announced that around 200 more jobs might also go.

The club said: "These hard choices are necessary to put the club back on a stable financial footing.

"We have lost money for the past five consecutive years. This cannot continue.

"Our two main priorities as a club are delivering success on the pitch for our fans and improving our facilities. We cannot invest in these objectives if we are continuously losing money."
