Ctrl Alt Deleaf and the leaves are gone!

Have you ever been on a train and heard the driver say it will be late because of "leaves on the line"?

Well, not on this train's watch!

Every autumn for the past 25 years, Network Rail - a company who owns and looks after Britain's railways - sends out a team of special trains called Multi-Purpose Vehicle trains (MPVs) to help keep the tracks clear of debris.

These special trains help to clear the tracks by using high-pressure water jets and a sticky solution which has sand in it to help train wheels grip the metal track.

This year Network Rail held a competition to name one of the MPV trains, with more than 1,300 people voting for their favourite.

But, what was the winning name... it was 'Ctrl Alt Deleaf'!

Don't stop be-leaf-ing!

The name Ctrl Alt Deleaf, is a play on words after the computer command: Control, Alt, Delete - which is used to undo things or go back - in this case, leaves!

Buster Grimes, Britney Clears were also suggested, as well as Leafy McLeaf-face, although this one didn't make the cut.

Tim Dunn, a rail historian and writer, helped judge the naming competition for the MPV.

He said: "It is a figure of fun, the idea of 'leaves on the line', but they are a massive, massive problem.

"It's a huge issue," agrees Tom Desmond from Network Rail. "It has become a joke, hasn't it? Calling it "leaves on the line" and the reason we can delay trains.

"But for us, the reason it causes all these delays is because it makes the rails really slippery."

Tim said the competition "is a lovely way" of raising awareness of what the MPVs do.

Gonna Grit Through This! What other UK vehicles have fun names?

Did you know, that MPV trains are not the only vehicles to get fun names here in the UK.

Each year local councils across the UK hold competitions to name their gritter trucks which help to make icy roads safer to drive on in the winter by laying salty grit.

Boats have also been given the naming treatment!

Back in 2016 a competition was held to name an important scientific polar research ship, which launched in 2018 and was named the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

However, it was almost named Boaty McBoatface after a joke suggestion by the public became very popular!

However, the team on board the research ship honoured the suggestion, by naming the mini explorer submarine Boaty McBoatface instead.

What do you think of the train names? What would you call them?
