'There's a lot of ignorance' - A young carer speaks out

There are tens of thousands of young carers in the UK,

Young carers have extra responsibilities, like looking after their parent who is ill, and doing extra tasks like housework because their parent is too poorly to help out. This means they can sometimes miss out on other things like school, and free time with friends.

Charlotte takes care of her mum who suffers from mental ill health because of depression.

She found that opening up to people and sharing her story really helped her.

Michelle from the Carers Trust says that young carers like Charlotte need emotional and practical support and that more needs to be done to help to help them.
