Walk to School Week: What are School Crossing Patrols?

Walk to School Week is in full swing across the UK.

It's a time set aside to encourage people to walk to school where possible and do it in a safe and fun way.

For many people across the UK, lollipop people (also known as School Crossing Patrols) help kids get to school every day.

But where exactly did they come from and why are they called lollipop people?
