VE Day 80: How children were affected by World War Two
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we're looking at how World War Two affected children at the time.
Children who lived in big cities or places that were at risk of being bombed were sent away from their homes to the countryside.
Evacuating children from vulnerable places was known as Operation Pied Piper - a plan the British government hoped would keep children safe during the conflict.
Evacuees often didn't know where they were going, who they'd be staying with or how long they'd be away for.
Sometimes the children couldn't keep in touch with their families that had to stay at home.
Ricky's been to meet Heather who was evacuated from her home in Southampton to a countryside village when she was just four and a half years old.
She tells her granddaughters Lucie and Amelia what it was like to be sent away from her family all those years ago.
